If you want to spend a few hours sightseeing without your suitcase, ask your hotel first, then compare station lockers along your route. If you are staying near New Chitose Airport or heading back there later, airport storage is another option. The best choice is one where you can be sure to pick up your bag before your next journey.
Storage and delivery solve different problems. Storage keeps your bag in one place, and you have to go back for it. Before choosing a convenient drop-off point, think about where your day will end.
Can your hotel hold bags before check-in or after checkout?
Ask rather than assuming luggage storage comes with every booking. Your accommodation may have limits on pickup times, the number of bags, what it accepts or how long it can hold them. A staffed hotel and a self-check-in apartment may handle this very differently.
If you need storage after checkout, ask when you must come back and whether the front desk will still be staffed. Let the hotel know if you plan to return late. If you are traveling with children, take out changes of clothes and anything else you will need during the day before handing over your suitcase.
You can send a message like this: “I have a reservation under [name]. May I leave [number] bags before check-in on [date], or after checkout until [time]? Is there a charge, and will the front desk be open when I plan to pick them up?”
How should you choose a Sapporo Station locker?
JR Hokkaido’s station locker directory is the place to start for station-specific information. Sapporo’s tourism site also has an illustrated guide to using lockers. Follow the instructions on the locker itself for the fee, payment method and time limit, as machines and locations vary.
Check that your bag fits before paying. Read when extra charges start and whether opening the locker ends your rental. Do not lock away your passport, wallet or anything you will need over the next few hours.
Take photos of the locker number, nearby signs and your payment receipt. Save the pickup instructions somewhere you can easily find them. If the locker uses an IC card as the key, keep that card with you rather than in your bag.
Also check whether you will need to go through ticket gates or into an area with limited hours to reach the locker later. Knowing the station name alone is not enough. Make sure you know the way back to your bag before you leave.
What if the large lockers are full?
If you are arriving with several suitcases, have a backup plan ready. Ask at the information desk about services currently available, or contact your hotel. Do not count on finding a large locker just because the station has lockers.
Be careful with seasonal notices. During our check, we found a JR Hokkaido notice about temporary staffed luggage storage from December 3, 2025 to February 23, 2026. That period has ended, and it does not confirm the service will be available in winter 2026–27. Check any new announcement before including it in your plans.
What storage is available at New Chitose Airport?
The airport’s baggage-service page lists a staffed counter on the first floor of the Domestic Terminal, currently open 7:00–20:00. Listed prices per day are ¥400 for small, ¥600 for medium and ¥1,000 for large items, based on the total of the bag’s three sides. Ask staff to confirm the size category and any restrictions for your item.
The airport’s FAQ gives a maximum storage period of 14 days, but the service page warns that long-term storage may not be possible. If you need more than a short stay, confirm in advance that your bag will be accepted and when you will collect it.
The airport’s coin lockers have separate rules. Do not assume the staffed counter’s hours, prices or storage period apply to the lockers. Follow the conditions posted on the locker, and leave enough time to collect your luggage before checking in for your flight.
Choose around collection, not just drop-off
| Your plan | A useful first check |
|---|---|
| Sightseeing before checking in at a Sapporo hotel | Ask the hotel whether it accepts bags before check-in |
| Sightseeing after checkout, then catching a train | Compare your hotel with lockers along your route to the station |
| Exploring the airport before a flight | Check where airport storage is and when you can collect your bags |
| Ending the day far from where you started | Consider whether going back for your luggage defeats the purpose |
On a snowy day, remember that you will be walking with your bags after you collect them. Our winter walking guide and underground walkway guide can help you plan those stretches.
A quick checklist before you leave the counter or locker
Confirm the pickup deadline, keep the receipt or key, note the exact location and set a reminder. Allow extra time for getting back. If a late bus or a long meal could stop you from collecting your bag in time, choose a different option.
Finally, compare the whole route in our airport transport guide. A cheap locker is no bargain if getting your bag back means an awkward detour.
